When Does a Doctor Prescribe Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate?

Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is an anti-HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) composition formulated by Antonín Holý, Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Prague. It was approved primarily by the FDA on 26th October 2001 for the treatment of patients with HIV infection

The medicine belongs to the category of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors that come in the form of an oral tablet and oral powder. In simpler words, the medications of this group block the enzymes (reverse transcriptase) that are responsible for virus multiplication in the body.

It is also known as an antiretroviral drug. For HIV infection, it may also be used in combination with other medicines of the same class. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) is sold under the brand names: Viread, Ricovir, Tenvir, Rivofone T, and Tenof among others.

If you have symptoms of HIV, your doctor will prescribe an ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test to check the presence of antibodies in the blood. Once the HIV infection is diagnosed, the doctor will further recommend other tests like CD4 count and viral load tests. This will help to determine the stage and seriousness of the infection.

Treatment-experienced HIV-1 infection patients: As per all the test results, those patients with HIV-1 infection having HIV RNA levels of 400-10,000 copies/mL are prescribed Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate. Treatment-experienced patients are those individuals who had previously been treated with any first-generation integrase inhibitor (an anti-HIV composition) and have witnessed HIV drug resistance or ineffectiveness.

In simpler words, the normal viral load of an undetectable stage is below 50 copies/mL. Therefore, Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is a high-dose ********** that deals with a greater level of HIV RNA and a stage where the virus has spread and starts to influence other systems of the body.

Treatment-inexperienced patients: As per all the test results, those patients who have not been previously treated with any HIV therapy and have HIV RNA levels of greater than 400 copies/mL are prescribed Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate as monotherapy. However, in a clinical trial, patients who even have HIV RNA levels of more than 10,000 copies/mL were enrolled and achieved less than 400 copies/mL with no low CD4 cell counts. In simpler words, the patients who have a significantly greater viral load right after the diagnosis of the infection are prescribed this regimen.
