Pelvic Pain: Diagnosis & Treatment

Pelvic pain is a problem more common among women. It can be because of menstruation, ovulation, infections, etc, and may come or go on its own. It is nothing to be worried about until it lasts long or other symptoms occur. A variety of treatment options are available and approved to manage pelvic pain both in men and women. Here’s how you can diagnose and treat this condition.

Diagnosis

If you are having severe or persistent pelvic pain, you may require the following diagnostic tests to determine the cause.

  • Pelvic exam: It is a physical and visual examination of the reproductive parts of your body. A pelvic exam is done by a doctor to inspect the cervix, vagina, vulva, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. It is performed at a doctor’s clinic and doesn’t require any special preparations.
  • Laparoscopy: It is a surgical procedure that involves the use of a fiber-optic instrument to view the organs in the pelvis. The tube has a video camera to examine different parts of the area.
  • Ultrasound: It is a non-invasive procedure that allows quick visualization of a female’s pelvic organs and nearby parts. An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures and videos of the inside of the body.
  • Lab tests: These include tests like a blood count test, testing for infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia, pregnancy test, and urine test. The combined analysis of the results of lab tests may provide a clear view of the problem.

Treatment

Treatment of pelvic pain includes the below-mentioned ways. Do not take up any new activity or therapy before consulting your doctor.

  • Pain relievers: Sometimes, pain in the pelvis is easily treated using over-the-counter ***** like ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, and others. Pain relievers can provide a temporary solution to pelvis pain.
  • Hot compression: To reduce joint stiffness and bone muscle spasm, hot compression can be used. If you have mild pain during your periods, using a hot-water bag is the best solution!
  • Hot bath: Heat gets your blood moving. It can relax your muscles and joints. You can go for a hot bath if you think your pain is because of the menstrual cycle or ovulation. This is because such pains are due to the effects of the ovary and uterus.
  • Psychotherapy: If you are having pain in the pelvis due to psychological reasons, psychotherapy can help relieve it. A psychotherapist deals with such behavioral or emotional problems.
  • Relax: Pelvic pain can be hectic and disturb your daily activities. Sit and relax for some time. It’s because your pain might be a product of muscle stress or spasm. 
  • Light exercises: Exercises help you get rid of a number of problems. Most pains related to the reproductive organs or menstrual cycle in females are manageable at home. Go for light activities like dance, aerobics, or others.
  • Supplements: Many supplements are known to be good for the reproductive health of men and women. Ask your health practitioner about the benefits and risks of multivitamins or other supplements. 
  • Antibiotics: When your pain in the pelvis is due to some infection like bacterial vaginosis and vaginal yeast infection, antibiotics can work. Such medicines include ofloxacin, levofloxacin, etc. 
  • Trigger point injections: For direct pain management in some patients, trigger joint injections can be administered. This can be a primary therapy to treat certain muscle pains. In some cases, these injections are given for temporary relief.
  • Herbs: Herbal drinks can help in relieving pain in the pelvis. Mostly, tea made with herbs is recommended to females who experience menstrual cramps and other pains associated with the cycle.
