5 Solutions To Keep Your Wood Windows Winter Ready

It’s winter, and leaks and gaps in your windows can cause problems for you and your family. Seal your windows with the right silicone sealant for windows to enjoy the cold weather in comfort.

We experience many happy feelings throughout the winter, including the first snowfall, holidays, cosy weekends, and vacations. However, many people also have to deal with the problems that result when a home or apartment’s temperature falls below a tolerable range.

Compared to plastic windows, wooden ones have many advantages, and it is thought that they can preserve the ideal microclimate in the space, which is important for a comfortable stay. But, a drawback of wooden windows is that they are prone to drying out, leading to cracks which allow cold air into the room through gaps between the frames.

The environment outside your home varies with each season. Although it’s a lovely and exciting transition, there are risks involved for your residence. Because of this, you should get ready before the colder winter hits.

What can you do to prepare your windows and doors for the winter?

  • Install window film

Window film is a simple and inexpensive way to instantly improve the insulation of your windows. It absorbs heat from within your home and prevents it from escaping through your windows.

Window film cannot prevent all heat loss in cold weather, but it can significantly reduce it when compared to the cold weather silicone sealant. Additionally, if you keep your window film up all year, it can help keep your home cooler in the summer.

  • Paraffin

You can get paraffin easily from any hardware store near you. People have been using paraffin to keep their windows winter-ready for a long time.

Although in comparison to cold weather silicone sealant, Paraffin might turn out to be more of a temporary fix. Paraffin makes it possible to close large gaps quickly and cheaply.

Melt the paraffin candle in a water bath and pour the hot mixture into a preheated syringe, closing all gaps quickly.

  • Set Up Weatherstripping

The most common type of weatherstripping is foam strips with adhesive on the back. When the wood window is closed over the weather stripping, the foam expands into the tight spaces of the window thus blocking cold air.

Apply a line of weatherstripping to the window sill beneath the lower sash and the top of the window frame above the upper sash on double-hung windows. You can also use the stripping directly on the sash. Cut the stripping to the desired length with scissors.

Wooden windows are both beautiful and long-lasting. Completing these relatively minor tasks can help you keep your windows in good condition while also lowering your energy bills this winter.

  • Seal Wooden Windows Using Weatherproof Silicone Sealant

Protecting the wood itself is one of the most important things you can do to maintain the energy efficiency of your wood windows.

Use a low-temperature silicone caulk to seal the gap between the window frame and the window sill.

Silicone sealant for windows protects the exterior of your wood windows by sealing them against draughts and dampness. Chances are that if you have used a sealant on your window’s frame before, it has deteriorated.

Examine the outer frame of your wood windows. In order to save money on repairs, you should replace cracked and damaged caulk with high-quality silicone sealants for windows.

Begin by scraping away the old caulk with a putty knife. When the caulk has been removed, wash away the dirt around the window with a stiff brush dipped in warm soapy water.

Allow the surface to dry before applying a new bead of silicone sealant to the window’s surface. Remember to use weatherproof silicone sealant for windows.

  • Stop the rot on the window and paint it

Identifying the rot and the amount of decaying wood is your first step. It is recommended to forego repairs and replace the windows if there is extensive rot.

Start by removing the rotten wood from the framing with your chisel or screwdriver until you can see the sound wood underneath. Use the brush to remove any remaining material after you’ve finished moving the rot.

Drill a few holes into the sound wood, about an inch apart. If you have drilled holes before applying your wood hardener, make sure you fill them. To strengthen the wood, let the first coat dry before applying the filler.

Next, spread a good amount of filler over the area and mould it to fit the frame. The filler should be firmly pressed into position using a plastic or metal knife, and allowed to dry for the amount of time stated in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Use a graded sandpaper to sand the mended area. For a superior finish, start with a coarse grade and work your way up to one that is smoother. The wood paint you select should be suitable for outdoor use. Make sure to use a colour that complements the window frames you currently have for a uniform finish.
